The different neighborhoods

The city of Pondicherry has 2 faces, in view of its geography and the activities that take place there.

East district

On the one hand, there is the eastern district, called "white", which is the quiet part of the city. These are areas with very little traffic, so generally very quiet. The pedestrian streets are rather empty of vehicles and even of inhabitants. The beach avenue, which is 1.5 km long with the Gandhi statue at the end, is a fairly peaceful place, with limited attendance.

West district

On the other hand, we find the West district or also called "black" district, noisier, because of a greater demographic concentration, supported by the unregulated circulation of cars, motorcycles, scooters, but also of vehicles. "Autos" and "rikshaws".

It is in this part of the city, that one finds the stores, especially clothing, whose number has exploded in ten years, that is to say the main sign of evolution of the city, but also a consequence of the globalization. If you want to buy a sari for your wife, you will be very well served from one street to another, with prices not very variable between them. It is a shopping district, with many restaurants and hotels, more or less large (4 or 5 stars for example). There are also more modest street restaurants, run by individuals.
