Story

An international city

The language spoken in Pondicherry is that common to the whole region, that is to say Tamil. The oldest among those spoken across the world, the origin of Tamil or in other words "the mother of all languages" goes back even longer than Latin. The national English language (except Hindi) is also a language that one learns from the first years in school, from the youth, and is well mastered by most Indians, especially by the young growing generation. To this, we must also add without forgetting French, but to understand this, we must go back in time.

A bit of historical background

Former colony, with the arrival of the French in the 17th century on Indian territory, Pondicherry was originally part of a group called the Territorial Union of Pondicherry, also bringing together the city of Karikal from the same region of Tamil Nadu, but also, external cities such as Yanam in the Andra Pradesh region, Mahe in the Kerala region and finally Chandernagor in Bengal. While India finally received its independence on August 15, 1948, it would take another 9 years for the 5 French counters to come together to create the Territory of Pondicherry on July 1, 1963.

Since the passage of the French on the territory, they consequently left a part of their culture, which one can illustrate with in particular historical places built at this time, like the town hall, the name of the streets or avenues. in French language indicated by signs.
